Maritime Consultant

Type: Fixed contract, 12 months with possibility of extension

We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our maritime specialists in providing technical advice and support to ports, harbours, marinas, terminals and ship operators and others working in the marine space. The role is offered on a fixed term contract of 12 months, with potential for a permanent position after this period.

This is a great opportunity for a recent graduate with a strong maritime background. Your work will involve visiting ports to collect information, meeting with people in the ports and shipping sector, with office time to collate and present information.

About the role

Day to day tasks will involve the collation, analysis and interpretation of maritime operational data to prepare technical reports. You will be writing clear and concise briefing notes, as well as presenting information to clients and external stakeholders. 

Not only working with ABPmer colleagues, you will also be regularly engaging with Harbour Masters, Pilots and marine operational staff. 

As we deliver varied projects throughout the UK and overseas, some project work requires site-visits, port and ship operational checks, small boat survey work and working away from home for around a week at a time. 

About you

This role might be right for you if you have:

  • A degree-level in a relevant subject or equivalent deck officer training
  • Working knowledge of ports/marine/vessel operations
  • The ability to interpret and present maritime information for board reports
  • Understanding of mooring plans
  • Experience writing navigational text
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent time-management, organisational and prioritisation skills
  • A full, clean driving licence  and a self-sufficient mindset (essential); UK travel is an expectation

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Consultancy or project management experience
  • Understanding of risk management processes
  • Small boat handling skills
  • Coding experience, C-Sharp, HTML, Java or similar
