Marine and Coastal Process Specialist

Type: Permanent, full time

Closing date: 7 January 2022*

Are you looking to apply your understanding of oceanography and sediment dynamics to the design and licensing of nearshore and offshore developments?

Are you wanting to be involved in marine renewable energy and industrial decarbonisation, playing a role in the UK’s path to Net Zero?

We are looking for a Marine and Coastal Processes Specialist who is confident in applying their technical understanding to the quantification and assessment of morphological and hydrodynamic changes, sediment transport and wave analysis.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to broaden the application of their oceanographic knowledge and immerse themselves in marine work.

About the role

Working with a team of fellow coastal and oceanographic specialists, you will analyse and interpret marine and coastal data to inform the design and consent of offshore wind and tidal power projects, port and coastal developments (including coastal defences) and other marine and coastal industries in the UK and overseas.

You will apply your skills to produce a wide range of reports to support projects at various stages in their lifecycles, from pre-feasibility through to licensing and post consent monitoring. You will produce analyses for environmental assessments (coastal, estuary and offshore) and design support services (seabed mobility, scour, extreme wave and water level analysis, etc).

Your role will include client engagement and project management. When not applying your knowledge and understanding in project delivery, you may contribute to or lead tenders, or work on internal research projects.

This role might be right for you, if you have...

  • A degree (and preferred, a postgraduate degree) in a relevant discipline, and a background in physical oceanography
  • Three to seven years’ relevant marine experience in a consultancy, developer organisation or regulatory background
  • A good understanding of coastal, estuarine and shelf sea oceanographic processes
  • Skill in collating and interpreting marine and coastal data
  • Proficiency in the analysis and presentation of physical process data including use of GIS, MATLAB or similar programming/scripting
  • Excellent report writing, presentation and communication skills
  • Competent project management skills
  • Familiarity in numerical modelling of wave, hydrodynamic or sediment transport (preferable)
