Introduction to Coastal and Marine GIS

This article is about 2017 courses. For the latest course dates, visit our dedicated GIS training page.

Although an increase in the availability of marine data can help us to better understand and manage the marine environment, the ‘big data revolution’ brings a whole raft of data processing, analysis and management challenges.

To meet this challenge, we now offer our three day Introduction to Coastal and Marine GIS training course four times a year. Taking advantage of the course last week were representatives from EDF Energy, Gardline, Kent & Essex IFCA and University of Portsmouth.

Delivered by ABPmer’s experienced GIS consultants and GeoData’s GIS trainers, the three-day course uses case studies and hands-on activities to show how marine and coastal datasets can be used to support decision-making.

Using ArcGIS v10.x, the course is structured around 11 modules that cover various GIS concepts and techniques.

As well as introducing marine data and GIS, the course considers common problems faced when mapping coastal and offshore environments. There is also an opportunity to discuss with experts specific spatial data issues.

The course is designed for anyone that needs to understand marine data, and its application within a GIS environment to support decision-making. We will be running the course throughout 2017.
