Finding the key to scaling-up marine Nature-based Solutions

Share your views on what would improve marine Nature-based Solutions activity in England.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) is an umbrella term for approaches that enhance and/or work with nature to address socio-environmental challenges, such as climate change. Such actions include creating or restoring habitats and features, as well as management actions to protect them.

Whilst there are already many practical examples of Nature-based Solutions in the UK, there is an interest in delivering both more and larger projects to achieve national ambitions for biodiversity and climate change resilience.

To this end, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) have commissioned ABPmer, a leader in habitat restoration and enhancement, to recommend actions that might be taken to deliver a significant increase in marine Nature-based Solutions that address climate impacts in England.

Marine Nature-based Solutions are those actions that seek to protect, enhance or restore biodiversity in the marine environment and deliver climate change mitigation and/or resilience thereby realising benefits for both people and nature. Examples include managed realignment and seagrass restoration.

ABPmer’s work will consider the existing regulatory and policy framework, as well as undertaking an evidence review and engaging with stakeholders.

This project forms part of a wider programme of Defra-funded Nature-based Solutions related projects and is expected to report in March 2021.

As part of the data gathering exercise, interested parties are being asked to provide their views on the barriers to scheme delivery and actions that could facilitate greater provision.
