Coastal processes and assessment training with the RSPB
Our recent coastal process training day was timed to coincide with the early development of the Wallasea Island Wild Coast Project.
In October, we provided a coastal process training day to members of the RSPB from their east region as well as other parts of the country. This event was timed to coincide with the early development of the Wallasea Island Wild Coast Project and involved a one day session in which staff from ABPmer presented a background review of:
- Coastal and estuarine processes
- Climate change
- Managed realignment
- Impact assessment
- Mitigation and compensation
- Monitoring
- Hydrodynamic modelling
These were, of course, massive subjects to deal with in a single day but the aim of the event was to give a broad overview of these topics. This overview then formed a technical foundation for further discussion. It allowed the RSPB team, with ABPmer, to review what we know about the issues affecting our coastline and to clarify the gaps in this understanding as well as the methods for, and challenges of, understanding the changes taking place.
Following this review, attendees considered and identified the priorities for future research.
