Access to Marine Environmental Data – report published

A new report considers the potential merits of expanding access to industry data within the marine sector and how this might be achieved.

Recognising that data is collected by a variety of stakeholders for a number of purposes, the Productive Seas Evidence Group (PSEG) commissioned ABPmer to consider the potential merits of expanding access to industry data within the marine sector and how this might be achieved. The results of this work has now been published.

Working with Peter Barham Environmental Ltd, the project team reviewed and defined all varieties of data that are currently collected by industry both for consenting purposes and otherwise, and assessed availability and accessibility of these data. This then fed into a series of costed technical options/solutions to make final recommendations on how to minimise costs and maximise accessibility benefits.

The report describes the benefits to the UK which could result from greater use of industry data. The report also identifies barriers to the greater reuse of industry data, which are predominantly focused around knowing what is currently available and making it easier for industry to deposit data and metadata in appropriate public repositories.
