Quantification of Exploitable Tidal Energy within the UK waters

ABPmer was awarded funding from npower Juice to build on their highly successful DTI Atlas of UK Marine Renewable Energy Resources and identify areas of exploitable tidal energy resources within UK waters.

The project involved the characterisation of deployment criteria for principal groups of tidal stream technologies and the broad scale rationalisation of suitable areas. The viability of developing such areas will then be considered against a range of economic, environmental and constraint based measures to help quantify the level of potentially exploitable tidal resource. This study builds on the previous Juice funded project ‘Path to Power’, as well as other initiatives for the Scottish SEA and the SDC ‘Tidal Power in the UK’.

Quantification of Exploitable Tidal Energy within the UK waters

Jamie Moore, project manager for ABPmer said:

"This project has produced a robust methodology for quantifying the exploitable tidal energy resources within UK waters. As well as helping to identify the overall exploitable tidal resources it is anticipated that many of the methods established during the research will benefit tidal developers by providing tools to help identify potential technology deployment locations, installation capacities and energy yields."

The program of work commenced in early 2007 with the results published later on in the year. The full report and associated GIS figures are available for download form the ABPmer website at www.abpmer.co.uk/20071623.asp
