SEASTATES ABPmer's metocean forecasting website
August 23, 2010
ABPmer, a recognised marine advisor to the UK offshore sector, has launched an online integrated metocean service offering customised integrated forecasting, data management and analysis all in one website, SEASTATES.NET.

SEASTATES, the metocean information service from ABPmer, combines real-time observations with accurate forecasts to the user on demand. Whilst a combination of interface tools enables the user to tailor the information on past, present and future conditions to their exact requirements.
By combining accurate forecasts with metocean archive data, ABPmer’s SEASTATES metocean service ensures that developers have the information required for planning work in the dynamic marine environment. Such information is essential to ensure that marine operations and developments achieve maximum efficiency with minimum risk.
SEASTATES forecasting model employs a flexible mesh grid structure to provide high resolution in areas of interest. This approach enables local variations in coastline and seabed profile, which may have important influence on wave and tidal propagation, to be resolved; ensuring that an accurate forecast is obtained. The forecast accuracy is then further improved by assimilating available metocean observations, increasing forecast confidence. Forecasts are generated for five days ahead, with up to four updates a day and for a large number of output parameters including: tidal currents; water levels; wind; wave and swell.
Dr. David Lambkin, Senior Metocean Consultant, ABPmer said: “ Working in the changeable and sometimes harsh marine environment poses a number of challenges. Having the most up-to-date seastate or metocean information from the right geographic location is essential to ensure that marine operations and developments achieve maximum efficiency with minimum risk.
Feedback from developers suggests that SEASTATES’ innovative interface tools which allow customised delivery and analysis of past, present and future conditions surpasses many standard methods. Especially useful is the option to integrate data with existing information services or tailored alert systems, which notify the user when defined levels for wind, wave or water level are exceeded .”
SEASTATES’ toolkit of operational planning aids has been developed based on ABPmer’s scientific and practical experience in both metocean data analysis and operational planning. Analysis tools include crest levels, exceedance, extremes, persistence and joint probability. SEASTATES analysis tools can be combined to better inform decisions.
