ABPmer wins a further Round 3 Offshore Wind study

August 31, 2010

ABPmer (ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd), a recognised provider of marine environmental advice to the marine renewables sector, has been awarded a further Round 3 offshore wind study.

This latest contract will see the company work with ERM to provide the East Anglia offshore windfarm developers, Vattenfall and Scottish Power Renewables, with ZEA advice relating to their 6,000km2 development area off the Norfolk coast, as well as the related project area Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

ABPmer’s expertise in marine geology, oceanography and coastal processes will be key inputs to both the ZEA and the EIA. The ZEA will identify engineering constraints and design for projects within the zone. The EIA will form part of the first planning application and cover all environmental effects that should be taken account in reaching a planning decision.

Bill Cooper, ABPmer’s Managing Director, said: “ We are delighted to be supporting a further major Round 3 study. We regard the marine renewables sector as an important business opportunity for us and the scale of these larger offshore wind projects is both exciting and challenging. We trust our continued pursuit of innovation and strategic research initiatives, such as the latest COWRIE report ‘A Further Review of Sediment Monitoring Data’, and our expanding metocean services we now embrace through www.seastates.net , will add value to these studies ”.

ABPmer holds a strong portfolio in marine renewable energy projects, and is active in matters related to:

  • Offshore wind farms;

  • Tidal Barrages and Low Head Turbines;

  • Wave Energy Conversion Systems; and

  • Industry-wide standards, best practice and guidance.

ABPmer has led several strategic level technical reviews related to marine renewables for Government and The Crown Estate and its expertise has supported the majority of Round 1, Round 2 projects and initial assessments for Round 3 offshore wind farms.
