Environmental Services

Overview

ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) carries out research and consultancy for the marine environment. This encompasses studies of physical processes, ecological evaluations, and assessments of development activities such as shoreline management planning, flood defence, industrial operations, port infrastructure, etc. ABPmer provides such services to environmental consultants who seek specialist support to meet individual project requirements. Where environmental assessments, audits or reviews require specialist inputs, our services can be tailored to strengthen the project team and provide the level of input most suited to the consultants needs.

Site monitoring for a wide range of parameters and a specialist advisory service for river, estuarine and marine environments, covering:

  • Morphological processes and shoreline management planning
  • Impact of structural and industrial developments
  • Ecological and habitat studies
  • Water and sediment quality assessment
  • Studies of ship related activities
  • Risk assessments
  • Coastal Habitat Management Planning (CHaMPs)

The services that ABPmer provides contribute to many aspects of environmental assessments, audits or reviews, for example:

On-Site Monitoring

  • Marine surveys including bathymetry, flow measurement, float tracking, silt and salinity measurements, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, pollutants etc.
  • Land survey for beaches, river banks, saltings and saltmarshes, etc.
  • Ecological surveys including benthic sampling and analysis, marine algal surveys and sediment sampling
  • Strain gauge measurements on structures, quay walls, lock gates, warehouse floors, etc.

Specialist reviews

  • Coastal morphology and coastal processes at both regional and local scales
  • Ecological assessments and intertidal and marine habitat reviews
  • Sedimentation studies, analysis of dredging requirements and impact of dredging activities
  • Navigation and mooring requirements, ship movement impacts and related contingency planning
  • Operational management requirements of inland waterways, ports and harbours
  • Determination of key issues for environmental management
  • Implementation of environmental management systems
  • Environmental reviews of management and operational activities
  • Modelling of process/ecology interations in estuarine systems

Risk assessment

  • Probabilistic analysis of environmental data
  • Reliability studies of marine structures
  • Risk assessments for water related operations.
