ABPmer Hosts Training Course

At the start of 2006 ABPmer hosted a two-day training course for Chichester Harbour Conservancy in the use of a new Geographical Information System (GIS) software tool called STEMGIS. ABPmer are currently working for the Conservancy to develop specialist tools and this specially developed training course forms part of the work. Five staff from Chichester attended the course to learn more about STEMGIS software.

STEMGIS is unique piece of software that allows the user to load and view data from maps and includes animation tools to visualise the effects of time on the data inputted. The staff from Chichester were shown how to load, manage and view examples of their own data using the STEMgis system.

ABPmer have extensive experience in the use of this type of software and the GIS team were able to put this experience to good use while developing and delivering the training course for the Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

Jamie Moore ABPmer’s GIS expert who ran the course said: “The aim of the course was to develop skills in the software using a mixture of demonstrations and practical sessions. The complete course was tailored for data provided by the Harbour Conservancy and this helped the trainees focus on the features and functions of the software that were being demonstrated during the sessions.”

Robert Perry from Chichester Harbour Conservancy, who attended the course, said, “This was very well presented and was just what we wanted. The Conservancy has an extensive GIS system with lots of historical information built up over many years. The ABPmer course successfully introduced new and exciting ways of showing changes in our data over time. We are now sure that STEMgis can highlight where and when climate change could affect our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with sea level rise, bird migration and landscape change seen as key issues.”
